The Heart of Character

As part of a unit on character and character development, I asked the 7th and 8th grade students to choose 10 nouns that they thought made up their self-image or identity. While many of our students chose nouns that define them outside of Good Shepherd (e.g. mountain biker, pianist, swimmer, dancer), three nouns rose to the top: athlete, friend, and helper. All 30 students had at least one of these in their top three, and many had more than one. I am proud to teach of a group of students who see themselves as friendly and helpful while also being physically fit and competitive. This balance of taking care of one’s self as well as caring for others is the Golden Rule of our faith, and compassion, service, and personal excellence are at the heart of our school’s mission. Seeing these lessons take root in the heart as well as the head is one of the greatest joys of teaching at Good Shepherd!
