Saving Lives

What does firefighting and law enforcement have to do with religion class?  Everything!  Jesus says that, "There is no greater love to lay down one's life for one's friends" (John 15:13). The mark of all Christian living is sacrifice for the greater good of another.  The antithesis of the Christian life is selfishness.  Fr. Harlow's 5th and 6th Grade Religion class had a chance to have a classroom visit with the St. Johnsbury Police Department and a tour of the Fire Department.

The students learned that public service can entail great risk and that it takes a lot of courage to be a police officer and a firefighter, but also a lot of motivation to be willing to make sacrifices to save somebody's life.  Both visits were very moving and, with hope, planted some seeds of future careers in law enforcement and firefighting.
