The other day at recess I saw something amazing. I hadn’t been in the playground for some time and a hut is going up in the style of Gilligan’s Island--at least, it seemed to me. The students have embarked upon a building project with natural materials. Such creativity and talent! It was still warm weather at the end of October and they were thrilled to gather sticks, grass and whatever else they could find. It is actually quite impressive.
In an age in which we are struggling to get kids off their cell phones and the electronics, I hope that these students will continue to use their imaginations to create. Their generation may have never heard of Gilligan, the Skipper, the Professor and MaryAnn, but if GSCS students ever get shipwrecked on a deserted island, they’ll be just fine.
