Christmas Break - December 23 through January 3

Adoption

Last year I took my 5/6 Grade Religion class on a Communion call with me.  I decided that I would do it again this year so that they could learn and experience the importance of taking the Holy Eucharist to elderly people who are not able to come to the church for Mass and to be with me so that we can all pray together.

Our favorite person to visit is Mrs. Janet Lucas. Janet lives by herself on Main Street and is well-known in St. Johnsbury.  She is 101 years old and her mind is as sharp as a tack!  The students talked to her about how school was going, what sports they were playing, what they did for summer vacation and their hardest and easiest classes this year.  Mrs. Lucas was thrilled by every story.  So, we have decided to "adopt" her as our unofficial great-grandmother.  In Religion class, we not only learn about the Faith, but also how to live out that Faith with charity.  I hope that, in the years to come, these boys and girls will remember their trips to Mrs. Lucas's apartment and the enjoyable time we had with her. As I told them, we will not always have her with us, but at 101 years old, she's setting a high bar!
